- The rise in price of energy and the rising cost of traditional heating methods around the world contribute to the implementation of alternative construction technologies. How widespread is this practice in Ukraine?

- Due to the rapid rise in price of energy, particularly natural gas, since 2005 the enterprises of Ukraine began to implement energy-saving technologies, including: installation of additional heating boilers using wood or other combustible bioproducts, rehabilitation of old boilers, installation of new highly efficient boilers. The installation of so-called condensing boilers with the theoretical efficiency of 109% (these boilers use not only the heat of gas combustion, but also the heat of water vapour condensation with the flue gases) has become particularly relevant in recent times. These boilers enable to significantly reduce heating costs (savings may reach 30-35%).

Installation of the wind generator in the household makes it almost independent of the power supply companies. Modern wind generators can operate even in the complete absence of wind - the speed of 0.3-0.5 m/s is sufficient. Currently, the only disadvantage of this structure is the cost of installation and maintenance of batteries and their service life.

Private households also widely use "water-water", "ground-water" heat pumps. New heat pumps allow reducing the electricity and gas consumption by several times. Thus, the heat pump consuming 1 kW of electricity may develop from 3.5 to 6.5 kilowatts of thermal energy, while an ordinary electric convector consuming 1 kW of electricity produces only 1 kW of thermal energy.

In addition, in the last 3-4 years the private households have begun to actively use the so-called solar systems. Using the solar energy they complement the main heating and domestic hot water systems, which substantially saves energy costs. Even when the outside air temperature is below zero, in sunny weather the system can heat water to a temperature of +70 ... +80 0C. This will be enough to turn off main heating system of the household.
